Sustainability Month

What is AASHE Campus Sustainability Month?

Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month (CSM [Campus Sustainability Month] ) is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. Throughout the month, colleges and universities organize events on campus and elsewhere to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability change agents.

UT Dallas is proud to participate in AASHE [Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education] Campus Sustainability Month! The Office of Sustainability hosts events to raise awareness of the value of sustainability in higher education. Hours for each event are applicable to UTD Sustainability Service Honors.

Purpose and Goals

The goal of CSM [Campus Sustainability Month] is to raise the visibility of campus sustainability and provide campus sustainability advocates with a platform through which to deepen campus engagement around sustainability. It provides an excellent opportunity to recruit new leaders and set goals for the rest of the year. It serves as a complement to Earth Week, which is held each year in April, and is often a time for celebration and recognition of the good work that took place over the course of the academic year.

Sustainability at UTD

The Office of Sustainability uses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for connecting students’ education to transdisciplinary application in order to create a more sustainable world. We broadly define sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” and integrate this principle into the events organized for Campus Sustainability Month and beyond.

Green Convene

A group of students gather around bags full of the trash and recyclables that they have collected.

The Green Convene is a meeting of sustainability-oriented student clubs, professional organizations, and University sponsored groups to discuss goals in sustainability, cross-recruit members, and propose collaborative initiatives. This event intends to foster inter-group communication and collaboration while promoting all aspects of sustainability.

E-Waste Recycling

The Office of Sustainability hosts monthly E-Waste Recycling events at the Student Union Plinth. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to bring small, personal electronics for recycling free of charge. Electronics will be handled according to R2 [Responsible Recycling] electronics recycling standards to ensure data security and mitigate environmental impacts.

Campus Cleanup

The Campus Cleanup Program is a program for students, by students, designed to help beautify campus grounds and protect our wildlife. Created and led by Eco Reps, registered students participate in a 3-hour litter pickup (training included).
