Work with various nonprofit agencies in serving the homeless, at-risk youth, immigrants, and those affected by poverty in the San Antonio area.
Tasks may include sorting donations, basic renovation and facilities maintenance, serving meals, and other outreach projects.
While many Alternative Spring Break teams had one main volunteer project such as building a house through Habitat for Humanity or learning about sustainability in a farm setting, our team, on the other hand, had a variety of service projects lined up. We helped feed the homeless at a community kitchen, we sorted clothes and cleaned up a clothes closet at the Guadalupe community center, played and talked to refugee kids from Burma and gardened at the San Antonio Food Bank. I realized that social service was to not pity those who have less than you, or the less fortunate. It is to give what you can whether it is in the form of time, money, etc. Social service is giving people hope.
