World-Renowned Mathematicians Join Faculty

I am pleased to announce the appointments of Dr. José Carlos Gómez Larrañaga and Dr. Adolfo Sánchez Valenzuela as adjunct professors in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Dr. José Carlos Gómez Larrañaga is general director of the Research Center for Mathematics of the Mexican Council of Science and Technology (CIMAT). He holds a bachelor's in actuarial sciences and master's in mathematic sciences from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, England. He has taught at CIMAT, Institute of Mathematics of the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and was a visiting professor in Ruhr- Universitat, in Bochum, Germany. He also lectured at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on knot theory.

Dr. Gómez Larrañaga was the secretary of the Institute of Mathematics of the National University of Mexico and the president of the Mexican Society of Mathematics. Under his leadership, CIMAT has develop important collaborations not only with UTD but also with the University of Berlin, Rice University and Florida State University. Dr. Gómez Larrañaga is member of the Research Advisory Board of UTD.

Dr. Adolfo Sánchez Valenzuela has been mathematician at CIMAT since December 1987. He earned his doctorate from Harvard University in 1986. As an undergraduate student at the National University of Mexico, he obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in physics. He is currently dean of the graduate school at CIMAT and director of the School of Mathematics of the University of Guanajuato. He has been a member of several distinguished scientific committees at the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and at the Mexican Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT), including a two-year presidency (2001-2002) of the Mathematics and Physics Committee of the National System of Research (SNI). He has been an SNI-fellow since 1987, and obtained SNI's highest rank in 2002. He has been a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 1993, and he is currently the chairman of the mathematics section of this academy. He has also lectured at UTD.

Please join me in welcoming both of these accomplished mathematicians, and the support they bring to strengthening the important relationship that is developing between UTD and the world famous mathematics institute in Guanajuato called CIMAT.
