The athletic training staff at UT Dallas has been named co-winner of the 2012-13 American Southwest Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year Award. The honor is the fourth such award the staff has won since 2008-09, which ties the league record.

The sports medicine staff is led by head athletic trainer Tom Monagan, who is in his fourth year at the University. Monagan also serves as the school's associate athletic director for student services. The Comets' assistant athletic trainers are Kurt Kammerer, who is in his eighth year, and Yukari Miyagi, who is in her fourth year.

"Each day, we take pride in what we do in providing our student-athletes the best medical care possible. So, any time you are recognized by your peers for your work, it is a great honor," said Monagan.

It is a well-deserved tribute to the three athletic trainers for their continued care of our 282 student athletes.

UT Dallas athletic director

"It is a well-deserved tribute to the three athletic trainers for their continued care of our 282 student athletes,” athletic director Chris Gage said. “Tom, Yukari and Kurt have continued to exhibit the consummate professionalism in the oversight of the sports medicine program at UT Dallas. The long hours never deter their desire to provide quality care for student athletes.”

UTD recognized the trainers in an awards ceremony held between two recent home basketball games.

The ASC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is presented by the conference following voting by the membership's athletic training staffs. All full-time athletic training staff members must be in good standing with professional organizations and be licensed either by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association or by the state, and the head athletic trainer must have been at the institution for a minimum of two years to be considered for the award.
