You’ve Got Zmail … and a Chance at an Added Bonus

With the deadline for migration of student e-mail from Galaxy to Zmail quickly drawing near, the Information Resources department is sweetening the deal to entice users to make the switch.

Students’ existing e-mail service is being discontinued, and about 10,000 users will need to upgrade to the new system between now and May 30.  With that in mind, Information Resources is offering those users an incentive:  The department is giving away 100 flash drives customized with the Zmail logo.

Users who switch to Zmail and complete a quick survey telling IR what they think about the new Zmail service will automatically be entered in a drawing for a chance to win one of 100 flash drives.

The survey asks for user feedback about the migration process itself and the user’s Zmail experience.   It also seeks suggestions for future features and upgrades.

Although the flash drive drawing is geared toward students who have been putting off the change, all Zmail users are eligible to take the survey and enter the drawing, including those who have already switched.

Students who switch right away can minimize any service disruptions they might experience by waiting until the last minute, when high traffic could cause users to be without email for up to 10 hours. Switching before the rush will take much less time—an estimated 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the user’s existing inbox.

Zmail’s improvements include a slate of new features that Galaxy users don’t have, including shared calendaring, social networking applications, synchronization of mail to hand-held devices, powerful search capabilities, and a full gigabyte of storage.  In addition, Zmail lets users create mail filters to automatically sort, tag, forward and even discard incoming messages.

The migration process has been set up to minimize complications.
