School of Management Excels in Undergrad Rankings
The UT Dallas School of Management (SOM) excelled in recent Bloomberg Businessweek rankings of undergraduate programs by specialty. The school earned a place in the top 10 among public universities in eight categories, and in the top 20 for the remaining four.
Doing well across all survey areas speaks to the overall merit of the school, SOM Dean Hasan Pirkul says. “The real quality of a business school is exemplified when not just one program but when most or all programs are highly valued,” he says. “Being held in high regard in many fields tells me we are on track in our efforts to deliver substantive content that answers students’ needs.”
SOM scored a No. 1 ranking among public universities in quantitative methods. “Excelling in this category is especially gratifying,” Dean Pirkul says, “given that the School of Management has always distinguished itself by its scientific and analytical approach to business.”
Teaching of calculus earned SOM a No. 3 ranking, as did teaching of sustainability concepts. In financial management, SOM ranked No. 6. It ranked No. 7 in ethics and No. 9 in corporate strategy course work. It placed 10th in both accounting and business law.
Data for the rankings came from senior business students in the Class of 2010 at 139 participating schools. They gave letter grades of A to F to programs at their schools in the 12 specialty areas. Scores were calculated based on the grades.
In the remaining four categories, SOM placed at No. 13 in microeconomics, No. 14 in operations management, No. 15 in macroeconomics and No. 19 in marketing.
The overall top-ranked schools in the undergraduate rankings were Notre Dame University, which appeared on eight top-10 lists, followed by Cornell University and Babson College, which each made six top-10 lists.
