Acclaimed Guitarist Brings ‘The Butterfly Lovers’ to Campus
Xuefei Yang is an internationally acclaimed guitarist who has given concerts throughout Asia, Europe and North America.
On Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in the Clark Center, Yang will perform original arrangements of classical pieces, including The Butterfly Lovers by Chinese composers He Zhanhao and Chen Gang. The piece, like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, depicts a legend of two lovers whose relationship was frowned upon by the social conventions of their time. Their circumstances are resolved when the two are transformed into a pair of butterflies.
“The Butterfly Lovers is an important piece because it merges Chinese traditions with Western musical forms and instruments,” explained Yang. “It has a specifically Chinese quality of lyricism and musical fantasy that comes naturally to me.”
Yang was the first Chinese student awarded a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. The New York Times praised her “feisty virtuosity, impeccable technique and sensitive musicianship.”
Yang has given concerts throughout Asia, Europe and North America. She has performed with the Barcelona Symphony, the Hallé Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, China National Philharmonic and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Fei has collaborated with other musicians and artists, such as cellist Jian Wang, the Elias String Quartet and tenor Ian Bostridge.
“Xuefei Yang provides a musical bridge between the East and the West. We are excited about her arrival at UT Dallas. Join us for that moment,” said Enric F. Madriguera, the Russell Cleveland Professor of Guitar Studies at UT Dallas.
Yang will also perform pieces by J. S. Bach, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert and Niccolò Paganini.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute and the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art.
