12th Annual UTD Golf Tourney At Sherrill Park
Raises Nearly $19,000 For Scholarships

RICHARDSON, Texas (April 29, 2003) - The University of Texas at Dallas' 12th Annual Golf Tournament, held April 25 at Sherrill Park Golf Course, raised nearly $19,000 for scholarships at the university, according to Robert L. Lovitt, UTD senior vice president for business affairs and one of the tournament's organizers.

"This was by far the best year we've ever had," Lovitt said, adding that last year's tournament had raised about $18,000. "It's for a wonderful cause, and, luckily, we had a splendid day for golf and a great turnout."

Finishing first in the overall competition was a family team led by Dr. Alex Clark, founding executive director, now retired, of UTD's Cecil and Ida Green Center for the Study of Science and Society. Also on the winning team were Jeff Clark, Kevin Clark, Judy Hamilton, Jarett Hamilton and Al Davis. Finishing second was a team composed of Carlos Pena, UTD vice president for university advancement and governmental relations, Tommy O'Steen, Bruce Peppard, Marvin Groves, Pat O'Brien and UTD student Thomas Wolf. The men's winner for longest drive was John Castilla, and the women's winner for longest drive was Carla Carpenter. Jim Arrington of ING won the closest-to-the-hole competition. Frank Frey of the Pilot's Building Maintenance team won two airline tickets donated by Navigant International Southwest Travel. Randy Bauer of MPI Architects made a hole-in-one on the sixth hole.
