New Exhibition, 'submerged,'
To Open at U.T. Dallas June 29

RICHARDSON, Texas (May 10, 2002) - "submerged," an exhibition of North Texas artists, will open in the Main Gallery of the Visual Arts Building at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on June 29 at 6:30 p.m. and will run though July 27. The exhibition will present works by Affinity Group artists Kathleen House, Melodee Ramirez, Ginger Strand, Diane Walker-Gladney, Diana Warrick and Martha Watson that explore the artists' individual interpretations of the word "submerged" and its connotations.

The Affinity Group program was created by the Dallas Visual Arts Center, now the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art. The program is designed to act as a support structure to connect groups of artists to collaborate, discuss their work and create exhibition opportunities. This group's project is focused on each artist's personal exploration of what it means to be "submerged" -- specifically focusing on the concepts of "looking beneath the surface" and "immersing oneself into one's own pool of information."

"The submerged exhibition continues UTD's long history of encouraging community artists and galleries to collaborate with the university to expand both exposure for the artists involved as well as UTD's presence in the art community," said gallery coordinator and UTD faculty member Greg Metz.

Joan Davidow, director of The Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, applauded the artists' initiative in developing a way to show their work and said, "I am proud of the avenue the Affinity Group format has given these artists to expand their careers."
