President Daniel to Join National Academy of Engineering Council
Jun. 6, 2013
President David E. Daniel will serve a three-year term on the National Academy of Engineering's governing council.
The membership of the National Academy of Engineering recently elected UT Dallas President David E. Daniel to a three-year term on its governing council.
Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, nonprofit institution that provides national engineering leadership. As part of the National Academies, NAE elects members based on their engineering achievements and serves in an advisory role to the United States government.
Dr. Daniel is one of three newly elected members to the NAE's 12-member governing council. The institution also elected a president and treasurer. All terms will begin July 1, 2013.
"It is an honor to have been elected by my fellow NAE members to serve on the academy's governing board," Daniel said of his election.
The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates, including senior professionals in business, academia, and government. They provide leadership and expertise for numerous projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life.
"The NAE serves the national interest by advocating for the highest possible level of engineering excellence and providing independent expertise to inform government leaders about engineering issues," Daniel said. "These types of challenges align well with my responsibilities as president of UT Dallas, and I look forward to working with other members of the council and with the leaders of the Academy.”
Daniel was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2000, and has served as president of UT Dallas since 2005. The American Society of Civil Engineers has also recognized his professional work and awarded him its highest honor, the Norman Medal, for papers published in its journals.
