Lecturer Nominated for Business Prof of the Year Award Sponsored by The Economist Magazine
Nov. 14, 2012
Mary Beth Goodrich, senior accounting lecturer at UT Dallas, has been nominated for a Business Professor of the Year award sponsored by The Economist magazine.
“I was elated and flattered that any of my students would think so highly of me to take the time and nominate me for an international award like this,” Goodrich said. “We have so many amazing professors here.”
Goodrich is the only professor in the Dallas area and among more than 220 professors worldwide to garner a nomination. The contest, which was devised by The Economist Intelligence Unit, focuses on recognizing and rewarding the best business teaching.
Among her most devoted students, she says, are the international students she teaches and advises. Goodrich spent time abroad in China for two and a half years learning the language and acclimating to a new environment.
“Those experiences help me connect with international students,” she said. “These students make a huge sacrifice to come here, and I identify with that. I also try to push them out of their comfort zone.”
Goodrich says she values continuing communication with students even after they’ve finished her classes. She encourages students to stay in touch with her to share news such as passing the CPA Exam or other career news. She will also reach out to former or current students with opportunities such as speaking engagements, workshops or internships that she thinks would benefit them.
“I first got to know Professor Goodrich through two on-line classes I had with her,” said Laura Smith, former student. “She was incredibly attentive to the needs of all the students in those classes. She also gave me the outstanding opportunity to work with her on an internship, analyzing the business processes of a non-profit organization.”
Goodrich has taught at the Naveen Jindal School of Management for 10 years and teaches various accounting courses and accounting information systems. She was awarded the JSOM On-Line Teacher of the Year in 2010-2011 and 2004-2005.
The last day for online voting for Best Business Professor is Nov. 23. The top ten professors chosen will be evaluated by an expert panel and narrowed to four finalists who will participate in a live “teach-off” next spring. The winner will receive the title and a cash prize.
