Texas Rep. Helen Giddings to Receive Community Leadership Award

Longtime Academic Bridge supporter Rep. Helen Giddings (D-DeSoto) will be honored with the Gifford K. Johnson Community Leadership Award at this week’s UT Dallas Awards Gala.

The award recognizes non-graduates of UT Dallas who have taken up the University’s cause with support, dedication, passion and enthusiasm.

The Academic Bridge Program was created about 18 years ago to recruit underrepresented, first-generation college students who have good academic performance. The students, who are from area school districts, participate in orientation activities and receive ongoing support including tutoring, mentoring and peer advising.

Giddings secured the first state appropriation for the Academic Bridge Program in 1999.

The 2018 gala will be held March 24 at the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center.
