Nobel Prize-Winning Alumnus to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Gwen Sancar MS’74, PhD’77 watches as Aziz Sancar PhD’77 writes his name in the Nobel Foundation’s guest book that has been signed by the laureates since 1952.

Aziz Sancar PhD’77 will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the annual UT Dallas Awards Gala this month.

Sancar, the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, was one of the recipients of the 2015 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

The journey began at UT Dallas. As a graduate student here in the mid-1970s, Aziz Sancar started his Nobel Prize-winning research on DNA repair, mentored by one of the pioneers of the field and his professor at UTD, the late Dr. Claud Stanley Rupert.
