Description:

This exhibit features herbals from the Louise B. Belsterling Botanical Book Collection. These herbals—compilations of information about plants and their uses—date from 1499 to 1820. Many of the Belsterling herbals feature intricate woodcuts and delicately colored plates. These early modern herbals combine art and science into an engaging experience for contemporary audiences.

Details:

This Botanicon is a first edition of Dorsten’s Latin-language herbal. Dorsten was a German professor and physician whose practical experience informed the medical aspects of this book. It is one of the oldest books in the Eugene McDermott Library, published in 1540.
