Bachelor of Arts in American Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in American Studies focuses on the cultures, institutions, arts, structure and social processes of the United States. Students choose two broad areas to study, resulting in a customized degree that is an excellent preparation for law, graduate school or occupations in business, nonprofit organizations, media and cultural industries.

Each student designs his or her own program, within specific guidelines, in consultation with an academic advisor or program head. With the required American Studies core courses, an American Studies degree incorporates relevant courses from the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and the other schools at UT Dallas.

The Bachelor of Arts in American Studies requires 120 hours, of which 51 hours must be upper-division courses. Students must complete a minimum of 45 hours at UT Dallas to earn a degree. Students may add a second major or degree, and may add up to two minors, if desired, while pursuing an American Studies degree. Students also are encouraged to incorporate an internship to earn college credit and gain work experience.

The Bachelor of Arts in American Studies is composed of the Texas Common Core Curriculum, American Studies major core courses, two option areas and electives. Students will take 18 semester credit hours of course work in two of the following disciplinary options:
