HR Forum Scheduled for June 1

The Office of Human Resources will host its next HR Forum from 10-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, as a Microsoft Teams live event. Please install Microsoft Teams prior to joining. If you need assistance, visit the OIT Help Desk. Unlike a traditional Teams meeting, you are not able to “dial in” to a live event. Audio will stream from your computer. Please ensure your speakers are on or use a headset connected to your device. Closed captioning is available, and there will be a moderated Q&A forum. Please refer to the agenda:

President Benson To Talk About Leadership on June 9

You are invited to attend the BRIGHT Leaders presentation by Dr. Richard C. Benson, UT Dallas president, at 9 a.m., Thursday, June 9. President Benson will share his insights and experience in leadership.

BRIGHT Leaders is an inclusive program that enables the success of all UTD employees by providing growth opportunities for staff and faculty at all levels. Participants can learn leadership principles and access tools so they may “Lead from Where You Are.”

Percipio Learning Platform Introduction

Learn about Percipio, Skillsoft's immersive learning platform from 11 a.m.‐noon, Wednesday, June 2. Kimmie Plummer, customer success manager from Skillsoft, will provide helpful insight on how to navigate Percipio. The platform offers professional and leadership development in a virtual atmosphere, allowing users to grow their skills in a way that best fits their schedule.

Spring CARE Awards Winners Announced

The CARE Awards (Celebrate Achievement, Reward Excellence) recognize staff who have demonstrated superior performance, offered outstanding customer service and performed acts that have enhanced the image of the University.

Staff Council and the UT Dallas president present the awards to a maximum of six staff members each semester. Congratulations to the spring 2022 award winners:

  • Julie Heckmann, assistant director of philanthropy, Center for BrainHealth
  • Katie Johnson, finance operations coordinator, Central Business Office
  • Alexander Leyva, student development specialist II, Galerstein Gender Center

Staff Council is accepting nominations for fall 2022 CARE Awards. The deadline to nominate is Monday, Oct. 31.

Roeser Completes Half-Century Career at Callier Center

Dr. Ross Roeser, executive director emeritus of the Callier Center for Communication Disorders, Lois and Howard Wolf Professor in Pediatric Audiology, and longtime faculty member in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, is the fifth UT Dallas employee to be honored for 50 years of service.

Roeser was involved in developing and providing leadership in the University's audiology program, as well as in the Callier Center in its entirety. He also molded the audiology doctorate program from its founding — all without ever having to formally apply for a new role.

Fundraise Through Impact UTD

Does your program or group need additional funding? You may be able to raise those funds through Impact UTD, the crowdfunding platform available to the UT Dallas community. Here's what you need to know about Impact UTD:

  • It is open to all UT Dallas staff, faculty and students (access to a UT Dallas cost center is required).
  • It allows you to raise funds from your professional and personal networks through gifts directly to UT Dallas.
  • All gifts are tax-deductible.
  • All funds raised go directly to your program.

Juneteenth Kickoff Celebration at the Plinth

The Black Faculty and Staff Alliance will host the Juneteenth Kickoff Celebration from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday, June 13, at the Plinth.

There will be performances, music and food. Free T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

Dallas-Fort Worth Labor Market Update

The latest DFW Labor Market Update shows continued growth in the region, with workforce numbers reaching all-time highs. The largest increases were in construction, education and health services. Read the full report to see which other professions were in demand. This month also marks the release of the consumer price index data for March, which reveals that prices are on the rise in the metroplex.

Workers by Drive Time Radius to Top 10 Business Parks in DFW

The latest edition of The Connection explores recent data from the American Community Survey and how it can be used to promote economic development. By combining it and drive-time data, the workforce study centers around some of the largest business parks in the region. Submit Applications for Staff Ideas Competition

The Staff Ideas Competition is designed to engage the thousands of professionals among the outstanding staff in the University's culture of innovation.

Staff and clinical faculty may submit their early-stage ideas for a startup or small business to compete for cash awards. The deadline to apply for the competition is Sunday, July 10.

UTD Tech Store Now Inside UTD Bookstore

Beginning Wednesday, June 1, the campus bookstore is now your one-stop shop for technology and software needs, too.

The UTD Tech Store is now located inside the UTD Bookstore located in the VCB. All computer and software purchases can be made at this location and at the UTD Bookstore website. Hi-Ed, the original tech store, will stay on with the University as a punch-out through eProcurement.

Lifestyle Medicine for Alzheimer's Prevention, 7-8 p.m., Thursday, June 16 — Explore the value of healthy lifestyle choices — from nutrition to sleep and relaxation. Take control of your own health and positively affect the most important organ in your body.

Husband‐wife team Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are co-directors of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. Dean is a behavioral neurologist and neuroscientist dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare through behavioral change models at the community and population level. Light Them Up: Energize your Classroom with the Power of Emotions, 4-5 p.m., Thursday, June 2 — Motivating students to learn requires getting them fired up about course content and its relevance to their goals and dreams. Join Dr. Karen Huxtable-Jester, CTL interim director, for a discussion of strategies to provoke curiosity and a burning desire to learn. Emotional connections help students realize the value of what they are learning and helps them to develop the courage and effort needed for taking risks, focusing on personal transformation instead of grades. “Research Reels: The Bilingual Language Lab School” is the latest episode of the BBS Mindful Minutes podcast.

School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences students Michelle Hagenimana and Anisha Patel sit down with associate professor Dr. Raul Rojas to discuss the work and inspiration behind the Bilingual Language Lab, which investigates the intersection between the bilingual student experience and its effect on academic achievement and opportunity. Rojas shares his personal experience as an immigrant working his way from the bottom up to establishing a successful lab that is making difference in the Latinx community.

Reminder

The Green Zone program, presented by the Military and Veteran Center, is designed to establish a network of University staff and faculty who shape a military-friendly campus culture. The next class is a two-part series offered in person from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 16. Both sessions are required to earn the Green Zone designation.

An additional class also will be offered in person from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 13.

Training topics include military terminology and culture, transition challenges for student veterans, classroom considerations, and campus and community resources.
