Dual Benefits Enrollment for Life Event Changes, New Hires and Newly Eligible Employees

Dual benefits enrollment may be required for employees who experience a life event change, are new hires or became newly eligible for benefits between July 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2019. If you fall into one of these categories, please carefully read the information below and contact a Benefits Administrator if you need assistance in completing your enrollment.

Employees with Life Event Changes between July 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2019

If you experience a life event change (i.e. marriage, divorce, birth of a child, etc.) between July 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2019, you can make changes to your benefits within 31 days from the date of the event by accessing My UT Benefits Portal. Click on My UT Benefits from the Portal then click on Life Event under Manage Account on the side menu. Then follow the online instructions.

New hires, newly benefits-eligible between July 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2019

New hires and newly benefits-eligible employees have 31 days to enroll from their start date or benefits-eligible date. Employees who are hired or become benefits-eligible between July 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2019, will have to complete dual enrollment (2018-2019 and 2019-2020). The choices you make for your initial new hire or newly-eligible benefits for the Plan Year 2018-2019 may also impact your 2019-2020 benefits.

When you receive an invitation to enroll online for your initial benefits enrollment as a new hire, you will enroll as a new hire first. If you are enrolling between July 15 and Aug. 31, 2019, you will be able to also enroll for your Annual Enrollment. If you are enrolling July 1-14, make sure to enroll during Annual Enrollment if you wish to make changes. Please make sure you review your benefit selections for both years. Read and follow the online instructions provided while enrolling.

Employees hired Aug. 1-31 will also complete their initial enrollment online first. Afterward, they are provided with the opportunity to enroll for the annual enrollment period with the effective date of Sept. 1, 2019.

If you do not make any annual enrollment changes, your 2018-2019 coverage will rollover, except the UT Flex. You must re-elect UT Flex each year. Also, Evidence of Insurability (EOI) will be required for Life and Disability plans if you do not enroll during your initial enrollment period.


While new employees have 31 days to enroll for benefits, we encourage employees hired in August to submit their initial enrollment and annual enrollment online as quickly as possible. This will avoid delays in processing your enrollment and ID cards.
