Deciding on Sociology

My field of interest within sociology is in education initiatives for low-income women and girls. It's my firm belief that education and health-care initiatives will enable girls from low-income backgrounds to break out of the cycle of poverty. This interest originated during my time volunteering at CityWalk, a shelter for domestically-abused women, and the root of this belief deepened during my time there.

I'm constantly inspired by the work performed by organizations whose missions are to improve women's socioeconomic status, whether it is through GED programs, workplace initiatives or reproductive health education. Moreover, it has always been my mother and father who have instilled and inspired this belief in me. My work is guided by the early teachings that I received from them.

My EPPS Success

Among the greatest contributions to my success in EPPS are the mentorship and guidance that I receive from my professors at UT Dallas. More important, their confidence and belief in my ability has allowed me to flourish during my time here. Their contribution will reflect on my work and involvement in my community.

The other furthermost contribution to my success in EPPS has been my family's support. Their emotional, spiritual and material support has allowed me to pursue my goals, and the skill sets as well as the ethics and morals I learned from my parents are invaluable.

Plans for the Future

In my career, I plan to continue to work with programs that aim to improve public policies in women's education and healthcare initiatives. Specifically, I'd like to be involved in federal agencies' women's initiatives.

Advice to Prospective EPPS Students

One of the advantages of the programs in EPPS is that students have the ability to expand their growth in their field of interest. EPPS professors are always willing to help students to improve.

Other Interests

I'm an avid reader in the areas of nonfiction and fiction. Within the past several years, my reading list has primarily consisted of sociological writings. I enjoy running during my free time.
