Counseling and Advising Network

The UTD: Counseling and Advising Network (UTD: CAN) is an Employee Resource Group dedicated to the advancement and improvement of Student Services Staff at UTD. Through professional development, networking opportunities, and topical monthly meetings, we seek to create a space that engages the on-campus advising community in advancing their professional goals.

Lunch & Learns | 12 – 1 p.m. in JO 2.117 on;

2/11 – Advising and Student Trauma (ECS 2.507; ECS Advising Conference Room)

Discuss how to engage with students who have disclosed trauma. The Counseling Center will be invited to join us for this meeting.

3/27 – First Gen Students

Discuss the unique experiences of First Generation students and how best to support them. The Academic Bridge Program will be invited to join us for this meeting.

4/30 – On the Autism Spectrum

Discuss support and engagement with students on the Autism Spectrum. BBS faculty who specialize in this area will be invited to join us.

5/21 – Military Student Competency

Discuss the academic experiences of our Military students and how best to support them. The Military Veteran Center will be invited to join us for this meeting.

Dean Smith will be joining us to discuss the Office of Student Affairs and the services available.

3/18 – Going Digital

Hear from advising offices on campus who have transitioned into using digital files and eforms with their students and get ideas about ways this can be implemented in your office as well.

4/22 – Registration Respite

Take a break from the business of the semester and join us for coffee and snacks.

5/6 – Teching Out Your Office

We have a number of different technological resources available to us through the university. Learn a little more about them and how you can potentially use them in your office. Products we anticipate discussing: Adobe Creative Cloud, OneNote, Qualtrics, Webex.

NACADA Webinar

2/27 in JO 2.117 from 12-1pm

“A Deeper Look at Incorporating Coaching Conversations into Academic Advising Practice”

In this Coaching 2.0 web event, the presenters will address how to incorporate a coaching way of being into a range of advising contexts and timeframes, from one-minute coaching moments to full coaching sessions. Participants will learn how coaching practices can address barriers to completion that have been identified in the literature, take a deeper look at coaching models that were introduced in the first webinar, and hear about the activities and progress of the NACADA Academic Coaching Advising Community.
