Fun Ways to Learn

Posted by: Christina Gollis, MS, CCC-SLP - Speech Language Pathologist – UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders

You now have a fun new way to help your children learn the alphabet and develop their reading skills. Starfall.com is a free website that combines phonics with phonemic awareness through songs, games and online books.

The “ABCs Let’s Get Ready to Read” section is great for helping kids learn letter sounds and pair them with capital and lowercase letters. Children then can move on to the “Learn to Read” section, which combines games and videos that teach phonics rules with books using the rules just learned. The books are interactive, so kids love to see the action as they read. The “It’s Fun to Read” section motivates children to practice their decoding skills with interactive games, riddles and tongue twisters. Finally, the “I’m Reading” area of the website presents stories from a variety of genres to allow children to enjoy different kinds of books.

Starfall is one of many websites that may help your children learn to read better. The interactive element and the variety of fun activities could appeal to children who are otherwise hesitant to pick up their first book.
