The Criminology Program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences will host Dr. Heith Copes and Mr. Jared Ragland of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the first lecture of the 2016-2017 Distinguished Lecture Series in Criminology.

Lecture Title: "GOOD BAD PEOPLE: Methamphetamine Use on Sand Mountain, Marshall County, Alabama."

Description: Photographer Jared Ragland and Criminologist Heith Copes’yearlong collaborative project, GOOD BAD PEOPLE, aims to provide a considered, contextualized portrait of those who live in rural poverty and struggle with addiction to methamphetamine.  Using traditional ethnographic methods (interviews, observation) and photographs (traditional documentary and portrait photographs, alongside images from family albums, social media pages, and texts) of more than 50 participants from Marshall County, Alabama, Copes and Ragland document how meth users construct personal narratives, social identities, and symbolic boundaries to gain a sense of agency amidst diminished social status and tumultuous familial and romantic relationships.
