Green Distinguished Lecture Series - Dr. Lingchong You
Thursday, Feb. 6
3:45 p.m. - 5 p.m. Location: RL 3.204

“Microbial Community Dynamics in Time and Space."

The Department of Biological Sciences is pleased to announce the upcoming seminar and invite you to join us on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. in RL 3.204.  Our distinguished guest speaker will be Dr. Lingchong You from Duke University. His research focuses on how microbes are by far the most dominant forms of life on earth. He will dsicuss how they form complex communities that carry out diverse functions and communicate with each other by producing and responding to signaling molecules. He will also highlight how these interactions raise fundamental questions regarding the evolutionary and ecological forces that shape microbial consortia.

His lab has adopted a combination of quantitative biology and synthetic biology to explore these questions. They engineer gene circuits to program dynamics of one or more bacterial populations and use them to examine questions in cellular signal processing, evolution, ecology, and development. Their analysis of these systems has provided insights into bacterial tolerance to antibiotics, and scaling, as well as strategies to use bacteria to living fabricate functional materials by exploiting programmed self-organization.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served at 2:45 p.m. before the seminar in RL 3.204.

We hope you will plan to attend.
