Fall 2019 Biological Science Seminar - Dr. Joseph Boll
Thursday, Oct. 24
3 p.m. - 4 p.m. Location: RL 3.204

Rethinking the Outer Membrane Barrier: Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance in Gramnegative Bacteria and Development of Alternative Therapeutics.

Antimicrobial resistance threatens public health because bacterial infections that were once easily cleared with antibiotics, no longer respond to classic treatment protocols. The emergence and rapid spread of resistance genes has outpaced development of new therapeutics. The Boll laboratory is working to characterize resistance mechanisms against “last-resort” therapeutics in Gram-negative bacteria, which include some of the most difficult to treat pathogens.

The seminar topics will highlight two overall themes, which include characterization of outer membrane modifications that promote colistin (polymyxin E) resistance in Gram-negative bacteria and development of a molecular platform to discover and characterize carbapenemase inhibitors.

Light Refreshment & Sweets will be served before seminar at 2:45 pm.
