His research interests include the philosophy of art and modern art, in both American and European traditions. Cole has a BA in history from UT Austin, where he began taking art history courses to explore his interests in the philosophy of art, with an emphasis on American art and Marxist aesthetics. Additionally, he has worked on the relationship between science, philosophy, and art with in cubism, the Russian avant-garde, and Duchamp. At UT Dallas, Cole has developed an interest in Texas modern art, especially the painters of the Dallas Nine group from the early 20th century.
