Cognition & plasticity

As detailed in Disterhoft et al. (1995, 1996) [see items 18. and 19., at http://www.utdallas.edu/~tres/neuro_pubs.html], aging human subjects experience greater difficulty learning some new material or new tasks as compared to younger subjects. Notably, the incidence of severe age-associated impairments (including those seen in Alzheimer's disease) increases with advancing age. As seen at right, the incidence of Alzheimer's dementia increases rapidly in populations older than 75 years.
