Open to UT-Dallas students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Scherry Johnson sponsored orientations on March 5, 7, and 8, 2011 for the SMART Board systems installed in five Teacher Development Center classrooms. Mr. Albert Ervin, a TDC student, voluntarily developed and delivered a 1-hour session called Introduction to TDC’s SMART Boards.

For reference and review, I’ve interspersed video snippets () from the Saturday workshop and links to supporting documentation herein. To view the files you will need the following (free downloads):

 WELCOME & BACKGROUND (3:09)

Click here to see how the interactive whiteboard can be used in class…

As I understand it, there are 2 components to using our SMART Boards: the hardware and some software… and a few simple variations on those. The hardware includes our presentation podiums (PC, etc.) plus the SMART Board 685ix interactive whiteboard and projector. The system automatically recognizes the SMART Board when you pick up a pen or the eraser; application-specific toolbars will be displayed. Notebook is the SMART collaborative learning software with lots of features you’ll want to explore. Work can be saved in ‘notebook’ files. If you or your students want to develop a SMART Notebook file away from our classrooms, there is an online freeware version called Notebook Express.
