m70.    What are hazardous wastes?

A hazardous waste is any discard material that contains one or more of 39 toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic compounds at levels that exceed established limits. They may also be flammable, reactive or unstable enough to explode or release toxic fumes, or are capable of corroding metal containers such as tanks, drums, and barrels. EPA estimates 6 billion tons of hazardous waste is produced each year in the U.S. (23 tons per person); hazardous waste laws do not regulate 94% of the country’s hazardous waste.
