How much ionizing radiation are we exposed to?
Ionizing radiation has enough energy to damage body tissues.
Examples of these are:
- X rays
- Ultraviolet radiation from sun and sunlamps
- Nuclear fission
- Nuclear fusion
- Radioactive isotopes.
There
are many sources of natural ionizing radiation, including cosmic rays from outer
space, radioactive radon-222, soil, rocks, air, water, and food. The effects can
be genetic damage (altered genes and chromosomes causing mutations in DNA
molecules), somatic damage (damaged tissues that cause harm during the victim's
lifetime), burns, miscarriages, eye cataracts, and cancers.
