Cities
or other human barriers, resulting in a 40% loss of our deciduous forests, can
block migration. (See Figure 06: Loss of Biodiversity) Large-scale loss of
forests will cause massive extinctions of species that couldn't migrate, allow
rivers and streams to become choked with erosional sediment, and eliminate fish
from these streams. Lower water
flow would also concentrate pesticides.
