g15. What are ozone holes and where are they?
Polar vortices trap huge masses of air for several months. The water vapor cools to ice crystals, which collect CFCs. Return of sunlight melts the crystals and releases the chemicals that react with the ozone. Once the vortex disperses, this air is released and circulates around the earth. The North Pole has an annual ozone loss of 10-25%. Ozone depleted air lingers over North America and Asia. The stratospheric ozone shield over heavenly populated portions of North America and Asia has decreased twice as rapidly as predicted. Ozone loss over the northern mid-latitudes will increase 10-30% over the next 30 years.
