g12.    How are mountains built?

A fault is a break in the crust with movement along it. Moving plates put stress on the rock, which responds by cracking.  The Tetons are fault block mountains. In a fault, the hanging wall is above the fracture line; the foot wall is below the fracture line. A joint is a break in the crust without movement. The Jura Mountains in Switzerland and the Appalachians are folded mountains. Folds are the result of compression. Up folds are anticlines. A down fold is a syncline.  The Gulf of Mexico is a syncline.
