e23.    How is soil important to plants?

Soil components affect the types of plants that grow in certain areas. Wheat, spinach, corn, peas, and tomatoes grow best in slightly acidic soil. Potatoes, berries, watermelons, azaleas, rhododendrons, chrysanthemums and marigolds grow best in very acidic soils. Alfalfa and asparagus do best in neutral soils. Beans, beets, cabbage, cantaloupe, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, peas, squash, and irises do well in slightly alkaline soil.
