e09.    What is succession?

Succession is the regular pattern of changes in a community. Early successional animals find food and shelter in early pioneer plants. Mid-successional species are found around abandoned croplands and partially open areas. Late-successional species need old-growth and mature forest habitats. Wilderness species flourish only in fairly undisturbed, large, old-growth forests. (See Figure 3: Ecological Succession) Migratory waterfowl travel along fixed routes called flyways. Canada, Mexico and the US have signed agreements to prevent habitat destruction along these routes.
