e06. What is “wilderness” and how much do we have?
Wilderness is those areas "where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain”— John Muir. Thirty-four percent of the Earth's land is undeveloped wilderness in blocks of 400,007 hectares. Forests make up 30%. Ice covered land, tundra and deserts make up the rest. Only 20% is protected.
