e04. What sorts of resources do rangelands produce?
Rangelands are ice-free areas that supply vegetation (grasses and shrubs) for grazing and browsing animals. Riparian Zones are thin strips of lush vegetation along streams. Most vegetation has deep, complex root systems. All rangeland has a carrying capacity: that is the maximum number of animals that can be supported without damage to the vegetation. Overgrazing occurs when too many ruminants graze for too long in one area. This exceeds the carrying capacity for that area. About 42% of the world's rangeland is used for grazing stock.
