FTP Procedure (using WinSCP)
(last updated: February 26, 2007 )

You will need to have secure FTP program on your computer.  I will be using WinSCP 3.8.2 which has a link from http://winscp.net/eng/index.php (click [Download] below WinSCP 3.8.2 released heading then on the next screen click Standalone application below WinSCP 3.8.2 heading and put it in a folder you can find later.  After download go to the folder containing the program and run the WinSCP382 program.

You are now ready to FTP your web files to your server directory.

Click the NEW button on the first dialog box and fill in the second dialog box as follows:

You may click the Save button and save your session which will store the Host name, User name, and Password for the next session.  Click Login and WinSCP should open displaying two windows.

Once you are logged on to WinSCP  set file permission default by going to Options (from the top menu) then select Preferences then select Transfer from list on the left of the screen.  Next check the "set permissions" check box (see image below) and use the defaults.  Click OK.  WinSCP should now work OK.

Note:  If you have transferred directories or files to the server (that you cannot access) before setting the permissions above, delete the files/directories from the server (you should still have them on your PC) then transfer them to the server again after setting permissions option.

Once you have set your Transfer permissions you are ready to FTP.  WinSCP has two windows.  The one on the left will be for your local computer and the window on the right is for the apache.utdallas.edu Server.  On the right side double click your public_html folder to open your web directory.  You may drag a file from your PC (left window) to the apache.utdallas.edu server (right window - don't forget to open the folder public_html before copying file).

If you have created a folder on your computer named 4320 then a folder named images under 4320, you can copy it from the left window to the server by pressing the F5 key or dragging it to the server (left to right).  Use the same procedure for html files and graphic files.

You may FTP files multiple times to replace a file with changes.  Happy FTPing!
