Putnam Meeting Announcement
3:30 p.m. Thursday September 22 in Pegasus Room,
SU 2.502
Expert coaching for mathematical tournament from Dr. Andreescu
Let's come in force to kick off the new academic year!
We will meet most Thursday's in the Pegasus room, which is in the Student's Union building.
Expect pizza, puzzles and pizazz! There will be a puzzle-of-the-day, a talk by Bill Scott on Quaternions and their rich history, and a puzzle open discussion. Bill gave a greatly appreciated talk last year on the history of mathematics, so this should be really interesting. There is also a description of the puzzle at the end of this message, so you can start working on it -- then you can come to share what progress you have made, or to be let out of your misery! The Math Club meeting should be enjoyable for anyone who has an interest in the fun side of math, or who enjoys puzzles, or even just pizza as long as it reminds you of pi.)
Following this meeting will be the Putnam preparation meeting at 3:30. I hope to see all of you who participated in the Spring, plus a lot of new exciting students. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the experience and expertise of Dr. Andreescu, who is internationally well known in the mathematical competition community, and has written and edited several books on the subject. The Putnam competition is an intercollegiate contest which brings credit to students who participate, and even more to those on successful teams. We are incredibly lucky to have Dr. Andreescu to coach the team; he is respected as a coach to mathematical teams of all kinds, and author of several books and compilations on the subject of mathematical problem solving. So please stay for this if you think you may have "the right stuff," or if you enjoy elegant and/or tough problems. This will be a hot group! (See end of message for more details on Dr. Andereescu's extensive publications on problem solving.)
Stop Press.. We will also be electing the next Math Club President as Curtis has decided to step down an devote more time to his own work. Many thanks to Curtis for a job well done!
