Examples of ID: Mark Twain

Full Credit ID: Mark Twain was an American satirical writer who wrote several novels about American society in the second half of the 19th century.  In 1873 he wrote a text called The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today, which was so influential that, the name the Gilded Age is now given to the era about 1870 to 1890.   The text describes the political corruption, inequality of wealth and desolate conditions that are now synonymous with the era we call the Gilded Age.

*What makes this a good id? The Id contains the time and significance of the ID to this course.  While Mark Twain wrote many works, this example confines the ID of Twain to what we have discussed in this course.  If we had read a document that could be tied to this document, a full credit answer would reference this document as well.

Mid Scoring ID: Mark Twain was an American writer who wrote about American life in the 19th century.  Twain wrote a book about slavery called Huckleberry Finn that discussed slavery in America.  After the Civil war Twain also wrote a book about the political climate of that time called The Gilded Age.   Twain’s description of this era was so good, that became the name that people knew the era by.

*Why is this mid scoring? It shows a basic knowledge of the term and of how it is used in the class.  It does not give specific details as seen in the first example, but gives enough basic information to show that the student has knowledge of the term.   Part of the ID, while accurate, is not relevant to what we have discussed in the course.

Low Scoring ID: Mark Twain was an American writer who wrote about America after the Civil War.  Two of his works are Huckleberry Finn and the Gilded Age.

*Why is this Low Scoring? This ID gives little indication that the student has mastered the term.  There is little sense of time period or significance of the term

Low scoring ID that you may think is high scoring:  Mark Twain was an American writer born in 1835 and who died in 1910.  Twain’s original name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he changed it to Mark Twain when he became a writer.  Twain led a full life, and based many of his texts on the experiences he had, especially those he had as a Mississippi steamboat pilot prior to the Civil War.  Through his life Twain became one of the most influential writers in the world and became friends with presidents, artists, industrialists, and royalty.  After his death in 1910 Twain’s popularity grew, and he is now conceded, as William Faulkner called him, the father of American literature.

*Why is this low Scoring: While this term contains MANY details, none of them are relevant to this course.
