Visual Language from Type: Expressive Image

Project One

Project One is a quadruple set of separate images, a series of four images. Four separate files.

Investigate a subject.

First Image:
Begin with paragraphs or sentences or phrases of text from a source of your choice – book, poem, game story, song, script from play or movie, blogs, text messages, programming code, etc.

Second Image:
Individual words

Third Image:
Syllables

Fourth Image:
Individual letters

Your goal in choice of design with the various images is to convey expression and meaning. Like figurative language, it is necessary to convey your expression in a vivid and artistic manner, yet concise and to the point. You want the images to grab and hold the attention of your viewer.

Acquire information on your subject, then analyze, evaluate, experiment, and restructure your thinking to produce your imagery. Your results will give form to metaphoric implications through compositional arrangement, juxtaposition, and typographic manipulation.

This project is a variation derived from Warren Lehrer (The Cooper Union) who was introduced to it by Mike Schmidt (University of Memphis) who picked it up from Andrew Blauvelt.
