Oaxaca Experience in Mexican History and Culture

Summer Undergraduate Honors Seminar

Organizers of the Oaxaca Experience in Mexican History and Culture invite applications for a summer undergraduate seminar to take place in Oaxaca, Mexico, from June 22 to 17 July, 2009.  During the month-long seminar, students from throughout North America will participate in seminars, workshops, and field trips organized and run by scholars from Mexico, the United States and Canada.  Students will be encouraged to carry out and present their own research.  This is a unique opportunity to earn university credit in history, art history, and anthropology, learn and use Spanish in everyday contexts, and experience first-hand some of the richness and diversity of life in contemporary Oaxaca. The seminar will provide opportunities, for those who desire it, to volunteer at various NGOs in the city. Seminar co-ordinators are Monica Rankin (UT Dallas; mrankin@utdallas.edu); William French (University of British Columbia; french@interchange.ubc.edu); and William Beezley (University of Arizona; beezley@u.arizona.edu).

Space in the seminar is limited and preference will be given to juniors and seniors who have completed introductory Spanish.

Cost for the seminar is $2,250 (US), which includes four weeks of home-stay with breakfast included with a family, program costs, and field trips.

To apply for the Oaxaca Experience Summer Undergraduate Seminar, please send a completed application as well as a brief letter of reference from one faculty member by 1 March 2009.
