In college today, you can pick and choose your professors. Some come to the professor's course and ask to be let in. Most professors do not have to explain their qualifications. I will open my ideas and philosophies to you. The act of writing is a concept that must be taught. The student and teacher must meet regularly and discuss the work together honestly. In order to learn the student must be willing to meet with the teacher and be vigilant of how writing is put together. My job as a teacher is to help you become the best writer you can be. In college you can expand your mind in many ways. Writing well is one means of expanding your horizons.
Every student should learn a command of the word and strive to live beyond the mundane existence that so often we are caught up in life. "Since we all live in a bureaucracy these days, it's not surprising that we end up writing like bureaucrats. Nobody feels comfortable writing simply; "Bill loves Marge." The system requires something like "a romantic relationship is ongoing between Bill and Marge" (Lanham 1). To write better you must have control. According to Sun Tzu, "It is the business of a general to be serene and inscrutable, impartial and self-controlled" (136). The key is discipline, but most writers agree that learning to write simply is important. "Our national tendency is to inflate and thereby sound important. The airline pilot who announces that he is presently anticipating experiencing considerable precipitation wouldn't think of saying it may rain. The sentence is too simple--there must be something wrong with it" (Zinsser 7). The keys to writing better are very simple. This course will train you to be a better writer. It will not come easily. The hardest aspect involves making writing new.
