Already, I see the beginnings of a hunger in your eyes. The excuses hangs there waiting to come out. But I do not like writing and isn't this only a prerequisite? But IÕm only a computer science major. My answer is that you are now in college. College is where all things matter. In the past it was believed that a young man or woman was to excel in many areas. We have become a nation of specialists. Pride no longer exists from doing many things well. Work should be more than one automatic, autonomous unit. I imagine I could learn to be happy in a cubicle creating software and passing it on to someone to tweak, refine, and get credit for. Ambitious and successful are those who expand themselves.
Having one specialty is like having one opinion. Though you are entitled to your opinion you should be open to the opinions of others. This is part of being a samurai. A samurai was like a knight and though he was governed by honor, he was celebrated far and wide for his opinions and attitudes. The study of rhetoric helps us form opinions, "to question opinions we already have, and to reason our way through conflicts or contradictions. It enables us to decide what we will accept as the truth about a given issue. It requires an attitude of patient questioning under non-threatening circumstances." (Cruisius 5).
