I had this story from a friend of mine who was in the SCA: Buncha SCA guys in a van, on their way to a war somewhere in southern California. They start to get low on gas, so the driver pulls into a gas station in what turns out to be a moderately unsavory neighborhood. To make matters more interesting, the driver is wearing rather Renaissance-style garb -- tights and little poofy shorts. As he's pumping gas, there's a gradually growing circle of the kind of people who hang around near gas stations, making semi- witty and increasingly threatening comments. Which the driver ignores until he's finished filling the tank; at which point he racks the nozzle, puts the gas cap back on, and bangs on the side of the van. The back doors burst open, and half a dozen large guys in full armor and carrying swords leap out of the van. Apparently, you never saw a crowd disappear so fast...
