The altar in Dwarftown matches your alignment /unless/ you are chaotic.
Don't try to convert the altar in dwarftown until you are ready to kill
the entire village (not necessarily a bad thing to do if you are chaotic,
mind you -- especially if you've been quested by the dwarven artificer).
You can use the altars on the orb levels (but be /real/ sure you've
killed all the chaotic guardians).  Hopefully you'll find another altar
somewhere...
