One perfect, balmy evening, I was biking along-not too fast, just enjoying the sunset, the warm weather, the smell of the ocean and wild fennel and thinking that heaven must be a little like Santa Barbara, when WHAM! a hot sirloin steak came flying out of nowhere and hit me in the face! I'm not kidding-someone who had been barbecuing threw a hot steak right off the grill at me (boy, did that ever change my mood...). I never did figure out who would toss a perfectly good steak at a bicyclist-the houses in that area had very tall hedges surrounding them, so I couldn't tell where it came from. My room-mate, who was at first astonished at the sight of the fat and steak juices dripping down my face, and then angered, rang doorbells and talked to people but no one would admit doing such a thing-or maybe they were just afraid of her!
