PROBLEM DEFINITION

Bluetooth technology is now the latest medium for advertising and marketing. Bluetooth proximity marketing has become all the rage overseas as the newest way to connect with potential or existing customers.

The definition of proximity marketing is a localized wireless distribution of advertising content associated with a particular place. Transmissions can be received by individuals in that location who wish to receive them and have the necessary equipment to do so. In other words, if you have a cell phone in the proximity of a marketing broadcast, you would be able to receive the message or advertisement.

Here's how it works. Imagine you are walking through our college, and you pass a proximity broadcast station. The key is to have your phone on and in discoverable mode. After this proximity base station will send the software application which can be installed by the user on his/her Bluetooth device. Once the application is installed the user can access various college related information on his/her device. For instance, during a college fest one can access all the events information using the software application. Think of it as a Virtual Notice board. This project involves a device called Bluetooth Dongle which has a range of 30m (approx) and can detect as well as communicate with multiple Bluetooth enabled devices within its range. The software required is build on a Java platform (JAVA2 MICRO EDITION i.e. J2ME) along with Java Application Programmer Interface for Bluetooth (JSR 82 & JSR 75). The software will have a user interface which will display multiple options in the form of icons allowing the user to access the required information. It also provides the user with an UPDATE feature which can be used by him/her just in case if he feels that the data specified is outdated. This UPDATE option will update the data wirelessly using Bluetooth technology via Server.
