Nanotechnology Colloquium: Another Look at the Kennedy Assassination (Oct. 23)
Clifford Spiegelman of the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M will be the speaker for the next Nanotechnology Collquium presentation. One of the first uses of the compositional analysis of bullet lead was in testimony to the House Select Committee on the Assassination of President Kennedy (HSCA). A distinguished scientist, the late Dr. Guinn, testified to the HSCA that compositional analysis of assassination bullet fragments strongly supported only two bullets striking President Kennedy and his motorcade. The presentation will take a look at this claim and include new experimental findings. The program begins with lunch at 11:30am and the presentation begins at noon. BioEnergy Texas (Oct. 24-26)
In working to capture opportunities for the State of Texas in the growing industry of renewable energy, the BioEnergy Texas – Conference 2006 is announced. The Conference, using the tagline: "the convergence of agriculture and energy" involves many of the State's offices and departments: Texas Department of Agriculture, State Energy Conservation Office, General Land Office, and Texas Farm Bureau, among others. The Conference will be held in Lubbock, Texas – selected in part for its location to many of Texas' opportunities in renewable energy: biomass, wind and solar. The conference will include: Technical Tours, a Workforce Workshop, a Producer Summit, and a Venture Forum. The program will feature Texas, national and international speakers and presentations.

NTEC, Inc. presents itsMedTech North Texas Breakfast Series at 7:30am on October 25 at the Embassay Suites Frisco Conference Center located at 7600 John Q Hammons Drive in Frisco. 4th Annual National IECG Conference - "Compliance and Beyond: Creating Shareholder Value" (Oct. 26)

Presidential Appointee to Discuss Impact of Education Research on Policy, Policy on Research (Oct. 26)
Dr. Grover Whitehurst, director of the U.S. Institute of Education Sciences, will be featured in The University of Texas at Dallas' 2006-2007 Colloquium Series Exploring Behavior and the Brain. In 2002, Whitehurst was named by President Bush as the first director of the institute, which conducts, supports and distributes research on education practices.
Whitehurst's talk, titled "How Education Research Affects Policy and Vice Versa," will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in room CN1.112 of the UT Dallas Conference Center.
Other speakers in the series, which continues through spring, include Dr. Larry L. Jacoby of Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Mary Dozier of the University of Delaware, Dr. Seth D. Pollak of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Dr. Ranulfo Romo of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Subjects will range from memory to the affects of abuse and neglect.

As director of the Institute of Education Sciences, Whitehurst administers the activities of the National Centers for Education Statistics, Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, and Education Research. He also coordinates the institute's work with that of other education agencies and the federal government and advises the education secretary on research, evaluation and statistics relevant to the work of the department.
Whitehurst previously served as assistant secretary for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement where he, among other accomplishments, spearheaded a historically unprecedented increase in the presidential budget request for education research. He also was a professor of psychology and pediatrics and chairman of the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University.
